Thoreau said, "Shams and delusions are esteemed for the soundest truth, while reality is fabulous." Writing professor Ken Macrorie speaks thusly of "fabulous realities" in his wonderful writing textbook _Telling Writing_:
"Tension is necessary to make a fabulous reality. Two things that do not belong together touch in some way. And their touching creates waves of further suggestion that are not stated" (first edition, p. 39).
