Dancing with a ball...

I've had this idea for a dance to a particular song stuck in my head for ages now, and while normally I haven't ventured too much into using props, this idea involves using a glowing ball. This brings me to ask two questions.

Where could I aquire a glowing white ball?

Would belly dancing with such an orb be viable one or would it be too tricky to really be worth trying?

Any thoughts/suggestions/ect. would be much apriciated.

I have a new rectangular veil that I would like to cut down to a semi-circle. I was wondering if there's a common wisdom idea of the ratio of the veil's diameter (or longest length) relative to the dancer's height. I'll make the math somewhat easy: I'm just under 5 feet tall. What would you suggest?

I'm interested in a starter pair of veil fans, to see if I like them. I found this listing on Ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/rare-hand-made-Belly-dance-costume-silk-fan-veil-3color_W0QQitemZ320478264056QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item4a9dfe3af8

Anyone bought from them? Looks like the feedback is lowest re: shipping time, but given they're coming from Hong Kong that's not surprising.

Have a friend who wants to get some Isis wings but she is 5'1" tall. Most of the wings out there say they are for dancers 5'4" to 5'9". Thought of children's wings but afraid that the "wing span" would be too short. Does anyone know where she could get some wings she won't be tripping over? Thanks!

I'm looking at their swords, I want a scary, fierce looking sword. I have the one from moondancebellydance that everyone has, but it just looks chunky and not sharp. I'd like on that looks a little more real, and I think that these do. Should I order from bellydanceprops.com or does anyone have any other product recomendations?

Any one here know lots about voi? I'm looking into learning. I have a couple questions that google couldn't answer, though.
1: do voi have to be silk? I know it's beautiful and perfect and flowing, but it's also really pricey.
2. Where do you buy voi? I know I can just buy a veil and tie it on, but they're typically a different size, right? I'm on a strict budget too :P
Anything will be helpful. My boyfriend is scared to death that i want to perform on glasses. The more research i do the more comfortable i think it will make him and probably me :)

Hi, All-
Since I'm new to this tribe this may have been discussed before, but I was wondering if you are performing outside are those fan veils (you know what I'm talking about?) easier to handle than a regular veil in breezy conditions?

Also--where is a good place to purchase them that isn't too expensive?

What is an average price for them?
The Snake is an animal.

This is my all time favorite quote:
The snake is an animal. It has a backbone, heart, red blood, drinks water, eats food, breathes air, feels fear, just like every other animal in the world. And it's in a body that is the hardest thing for the average person to understand.
Dave Barker

Just a reminder...
A snake is a living breathing dance partner, please treat them with care and respect. They are wild animals and they can and will bite. Just be sure it is not an audiance member that gets bit. Also please be sure you have the venues permission and alert your audiance that a live snake will be appearing, that way those with fear of snakes may leave for your performance, or they just may not be allowed in because of health codes.

Please keep these things in consideration when performing with snakes they are not just props. I call them partners.
There is also a great tribe for more questions about dancing with snakes.

Hi everyone,

I've discovered that I really like dancing with props. From Zills, Veils, Swords, ........

so now I'm interested in getting some dance fans. But I don't know where to start.

Would anyone have advice on where I could get a good quality pair of dance fans, for what is hopefully a cheap price?

Thanks so much in advance.

I'm trying to find some music to dance with my ball python to. I'm typically a cabaret dancer but am learning tribal so that he and I can dance together. Since I'm fairly new to the tribal scene I'm not as familiar with the music. Any suggestions for some songs I could try out?

Selling set of 12" Fire Fingers

If you have ever thought about learning Fire Fingers, here's your chance to get a good set for a discounted price.
I'm selling a set of 8 barely used 12" Fire Fingers. 4 of the fire fingers have been lit only once to practice and they are in otherwise perfect condition. The set was purchased through Bearclaw Manufacturing and here's a link to the set on their site http://www.bearclawmfg.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/38/products_id/163?osCsid=2f31705008e4fab5b66201519ad4f54d

The only reason I'm selling these is because I decided I would prefer to use 9" fingers, so I would consider a trade for a set of 9" fingers in good condition. Otherwise, I'm asking $100 for this set and I accept paypal or check. Please PM me with questions.

Thank you!

rajastani or other southern Indian metal pot...

I had the great pleasure of seeing some fantastic dancers at a totally random meetup where they were balancing beautiful metal pots, something akin to an old-style milk cannister but shorter (about 12-16 inches tall - 8-10 inches wide) and decorated with embroidered fabric and mirrors. Flat sided narrow-mouthed jug, metal, and really coolski - I would kill to get my hands on one. However, don't seem to be turning up any leads, and don't even know what to search now. "Rajasthani pot-jug-cannister" doesn't turn up what I'm looking for, and I'm losing creativity in my search terms. Anyone out there seen one?

Turkish Spoons....

OK, I have this thing about turkish spoons. Love them!

I have small ones that are available through Atlantis Bellydance (or some name like that). They have the short diamond shaped handles.

I have still been looking for the more authentic, long handled, ones. And I found them. But they are rather expensive (given that they are technically just wooden spoons - $17.00 per pair - and to play authentically, you'd need two pair).

http://larkinthemorning.com/product.asp?pn=SPO011&Wooden+Spoons=&bhcd2=1203457540

Then I also found these on ebay which look very similar. And I was wondering if anyone here thought they would work just as well, or is there something special about the design for the musical ones that makes them special?

I finally got to achieve my dream of dancing with a snake! borrowed a friend's 8 ft red tail boa. it was fantastic but changes your whole perspective on the dance, lots more going on with the lower body and the upper body is more stable, since you have to support the snake and keep track of what its doing!

see my profile for photos! I am now known as the snake dancer! I love it

Fire by Rix ** X-POST **

Has anyone here ever ordered the dragon scimitar from Fire by Riz (wicked or unwicked)? I was going to buy the one from Kult of Athena, but they're backordered and I was told it would take at least a month for them to come in and I need one much sooner than that. Does anyone know if there's a difference between the two that would account for the major price difference (I did notice that the weight is the same...)? How well do they balance? Do you have to flip the hilt to make it balance properly? Any info/advice would be greatly appreciated! This is my first sword, and I don't want to get ripped off and pay double what I should, but I also don't want to waste my money on something hat is poor quality.

Thank you!

double veils

I'm 5 ft. 8 and have no idea what size veils to get for a double veil routine. I have a chiffon veil that works for someone 5 ft. 3 and so I have about 4 in. free on each hand when holding the veil, but I would like to have more left over after I've extended my arms. I've read that half circle veils work for double veil routines, but have seen it done with rectangular ones. I'm still trying to figure out how many yards I need for my height. As far as the material, I'm going to go with silk.

Anyone able to give me some advice as to what size & cut I should get? :)

Attn: goblet dancers, I need your help

I bought some goblets from Pier One which I've been practicing on, but the video I have shows tricks done on a different style of goblet which I am unable to do. It may be because of the shape of the goblets I have, or that my feet keep sticking to the glasses, or that my base board which is a piece of paneling has too much friction. Or it very well could be that Veda makes it look way easier than it really is. I'm hoping that it's the shape of the goblet, so I'm looking for similar goblets. I'm curious about the style of goblet Veda Sereem uses in her instructional video, and I've searched all around my area for restaurant supply stores with no luck. I found a case of 12 12oz. goblets for $40 online, and I'm about 2 thoughts away from purchasing them, but obviously 12 is way too many. Does anybody want to split a case of goblets with me? Or do you have at least 4 bellydance-strength goblets you would be willing to sell me? Here's an example of the style I'm interested in (wide mouth):

I am planning on doing a double sword dance in a few weeks, but when I went to order another balady sword from kult of athena they were back ordered which sucks.

My dilemma is this.

I am planning on ordering the Cas Iberia sword but everyone is saying that its a lot heavier than the balady sword. I already own a balady sword and its not that heavy.

How much heavier is the Cas Iberia.

I am not worried about the balance on my head, I am more concerned about swinging my arms. Is it so heavy that lifting it with one arm is impossible??

I am still a beginner belly dancer, but I would like to start thinking about props soon.
I'm looking for a balancing prop, as I need to work on my balance but also because a long term goal of mine is to learn to dance with a snake (a few years away yet don't worry) so I would like something where the movements are kept slow and fluid, nothing too fast.
Obviously swords are cool, but are these the best for beginners? How are baskets and things? And for that matter, how many other kinds of balancing props are there?
Any info would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks :)
Nie

Just a question for you ladies....and gents...
What is the most AMAZING use of props that you have EVER seen? ....In bellydance of course!
I would like to see some amazing videos...any on YouTube? I did see one and I forget who the dancer is, but she had a dagger in her mouth pointing straight up and a sword balanced on top of the daggers sharp point. She even spun the sword, hellicopter like, and did a split!

Any suggestions of where to buy light weight swords?

Seems everyone is selling the heavier swords these days, like the chrome ones or heavy scimitars.

Thanks,

Also, I've only been able to locate 1 dvd with any kind of instruction on it, any suggestions out there?

Zen Ptah swords for sale - open work blades (xpost)

Hi everyone

i'm looking to sell 2 - 3 zen ptah swords, made in australia, stainless steel blade - two have bronze handles and "stones" inlaid into the blade/handle. Good balance points, scimitar shape, very "pretty" sword but also very cabaret to me, and I've fallen under the spell of the mighty Cas Iberias. GREAT beginners sword - they are all heavy swords easy to control.

I'll post pics in my profile or send if you're interested. Retail these swords are over $300 each and very hard to come by...if you're interested shoot me a message as I'll be posting to ebay at the end of the week otherwise.

Fire Hat

This is a hand crafted fire prop. Should be used by experience fire artist, with all the necessary fire precaution taken. This hat will hold a flame upon your head. Not sure what the metal structure was originally for but I found it years ago at a thrift store. The metal structure is covered in a layer of black felt and then with a top layer of stretch velvet. The hat should be dampen with water while performing in it. It is sewn to a base cap that will fit snug to the head if it is to large you can tie scarf abound you head to make a snug fit. It id decorated with sequin trim, metal beads and shells. More ornaments can be added if you like. The hat also has tie end that can tie under the neck. The metal dish that will hold the flame can be replaced if ever need by unscrewing and just replacing with another cat food can.
This is the 2nd fire hat I have ever made. It may be the only one around I think the 1st one has be lost.
This is a one of a kind piece and remember when you use this you need to have someone who is watching the flame, You will not be able to see it. This fire hat is 75.00 plus shipping. email for more questions and photos

What do you do when you have practiced something a million times and get it just right and then in the middle of your performance it all goes wrong.

case in point: I have been practicing with my veil fans since I got them at Rakkasah. I practiced this move where I pulled them out of the bottom of my belt and then snapped them open. I had gotten it perfect during practices the last 2 weeks so I felt fairly confident when I decided to try it out on a unsuspecting audience. Here's what happened:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rRxfRxfz2w

I was horrified, and so angry with myself that even told an unsuspecting audience member that his compliment was appreciated afterwards, but the performance sucked.

What do you do when you have a prop malfunction?

So I have always been in love with the infamous christmas song, carol of the bells. I found a great instrumental version and I'm on the fence about doing a wings number to it for my bellydance academy's christmas party. What are your takes on this? I guess I feel a bit odd because I like to do my wings routines with other movements as well hips, rolls etc. and something makes me feel a bit odd about adding this to a christmas song. Please let me know what you ladies think, I'm wondering if it's just me of some of you understand. I need to decide about my solo soon, the christmas wings can either be really good or really bad so please help me decide!

props I dance with

Hi all! I am always looking for new props to dance with so I figured I'd share what I use and what my close dancer friends use. :) Hint? :)

Swords - I have a saber, a beheader and a scimitar I am going to convert into a fire sword.
Veils - circles, half circles, 3 & 4 yard rectangles, double half circles.
canes - dainty decorated canes and heavy traditional canes, double canes
sticks - decorated with ribbon. My 'trick' is to balance on my head and drop them to balance on the small of my back/butt. I also lay on my back an roll them on my belly.
Candles/lotus candle holders.
Tray with items on it.
Coins - flip them on the belly.
snake - it is a rather realistic rubber snake that I put around my neck/waist and do tribal like moves.
Fire Fans, Fire staff, a friend has fire poi, double batons and claws.
Silk fans, single and double.
Zills, drums, maraccas.
Baskets of various sizes/materials
Gypsy skirts
long stick - a friend does tatib.
Voodoo Doll - I dress it to match my outfit and use it for audience participation.
I want to start doing poi and veil poi and get some silk fans that have the long veil tails. I also am looking to get some chinese long silk ribbons and glasses for glass dancing.

So, what do ya'll use or want to use?
Protecting your wings

I've learned the trick of pinning the bottom of the pole part of the wings so that the poles don't fly out the bottom, however what about the hand part of the pole?

Where I hold the poles the iridescent silk wings seem to be pulling apart. Any suggestions on how to mend, fix or prevent this from happening?

Thanks,

In the previous thread on balancing swords - someone brought up balancing canes. I've never balanced a sword before, but I've been trying to practice balancing with the cane: getting to the floor and doing floorwork, coming back up gracefully, etc. Those of you out there who have danced with both: which is easier?

Candle Holders

I am looking for candle holders which sounds easy to find but are not.. I am looking for the type that Sadie used in the Temptation of Belly Dance...here is the clip, she is the second dancer:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=uut-TlVj8B8

Does anyone know where I can find these and also, what is used to keep them lit? I am assuming its a wick soaked in kerosene or something as there is no actual candle..I have tried jar type candles but find that 1. wax can get messy and 2. if they are candles they run the risk of falling out....

Any ideas would be helpful!

Sword balancing for long periods of time

Okay...so I bought a sword a week ago and I am in love with it. I have no problem balancing it and I want it to be on my head ALL the time. I just started choreographing a sword piece with 2 other ladies and I noticed that they were wearing some thick velvet headbands to balance their swords on, and that brought up tons of questions on the subject.
Oh, experienced sword people, would you guys help a newbie out?
Does the headband detract from the mistique a sword brings to the dance? I mean, will people think that the headband's a trick to keep the sword in place?
Is the headband just for practice, to cushion the skull from the sword? Does it keep people from getting headaches when they balance it for long periods of time? I don't really have a problem with my head hurting (it starts to hurt at about 40 minutes of balancing, I'm hard headed :P) so should I wear one? Will keeping a sword on your head for long periods of time toughen up your head or just hurt it?
I'm sorry I've got so many questions, but i'm new to this... :) Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

So I'd like to start learning to drum, but first... I need a drum!

I know I want a doumbek, so what I'd like to know is, what should I look for in a drum? I just want something that would allow me to participate in drumming circles or to play with on my own, so I don't need top-of-the-line. I just need something affordable. But on the same note, I don't want to buy a little trinket-y type of thing. I do want something nice. What should I look for? About what size is good for a dancer and a beginning drummer?

I just joined this tribe (I can't believe I never found it before).
I'm all-about props, it's what makes belly dancing fun and when you use a traditional prop fusion and tribal seem so much more rooted.

So I was wondering if you have discussed dancing on glasses

Here's a few links I googled on the subject:

http://aleena.com/miramar/TheSlowPart.htm
http://americanistan.com/id62.html
http://www.zilltech.com/FAQGlass.html

I once even researched sources for unbreakable plastic goblets, but never made the purchase.

Anyone else here intrigued by this?

I am a tribal fusion dancer and my troup was hired for a corporate gig where we have been asked to dance with snakes. I have never handled a snake, much less danced with one. The snakes are being provided but all we get is one short rehearsal with them the morning of the gig.
Can anyone tell me what to expect, what types of moves would work best, and how to rehearse and prepare for this?

I am working on a Melaya Leff routine. I have had some persons say that I should chew gum while I'm dancing. Others say not to do it. Any words of wisdom?

OK, as I've explained previously, my veil is out to get me! Seriously out to get me. Tried several times to strangle me.

I can accept that and practice and hopefully someday come to an understanding with my veil.

Now, last night, I'm watching So You Think You Can Dance and Pasha, a latin ballroom dancer, did a solo with a big ole cape!

An AMAZING solo! He had that thing literally flying.....it looked like it was alive. And not ONCE did it try to strangle him.

Hey everyone!
I am looking for a sword similar to the Kult of Athena Baladay Scimitar. They are back ordered right now and I had hoped to get it soon. Does anyone know of another sword and vendor with similar quality and style swords?
Thanks a bunch!

OK, I've been doing my safety research. But the one thing I cannot seem to find any information on is TYPE of palm torch.

Every distributer I've looked at offers a different style. Are there any opinions on what is the best?

Also, founnd these on ebay.....I know they are for magic shows, but would they work the same way and be usable? Or aren't they designed for extended burning the way a palm torch would be?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250141012559&fromMakeTrack=true&ssPageName=VIP:watchlink:top:us

I want to give this a try, but I don't want to throw away money only to find out I've gotten the wrong kind of equipment. Thanks.

Medeea Tray Chic video

Recently I asked about any videos on dancing with trays and I was directed to www.beledi.com.

I bought Medeea's Tray Chic video and was asked to give an opinion on it after I viewed it.

I recieved it yesterday adn watched it last night. OK, first of all, Medeea herself says that the video quality is not that great. She has the camera on a tripod and she is doing everything herself. Which, while it doesn't make for great technical video, DOES give the video a neat sense of being in the room WITH her learning.

Now, as far as the content, I've got to say I was very happily surprised. I was expecting some basic information and some basic moves and then lots of performance. But she really takes her time. She shows how to select a tray and the items to put ON the tray. She explains how to prepare a tray.

When she gets into dancing with the tray, she really breaks down LOTS of moves that are usable for tray work. She goes into floor work.

There is a performance by her at the beginning and a performance at a hafla by one of her students at the end.

The rest is instructional. She even teaches some short practice routines which (althouth I did not try them last night) I am very sure will be helpful in getting the hang of putting moves together wiht a tray on your head.

She also includes written instructions with each of her videos (for this one that includes a breakdown of the practice routines).

So, anyway, overall, I was very pleased with this video.

As a side note: I also bought her sword video and fan video, but did not watch them yet.

And I bought two of her peacock feather fans (which are priced amazingly reasonably). They are absolutely gorgeous. She includes instructions on care and how to strengthen them for performance. If you are interested in working with fans, I would 100% recommend checking out her website.

OK, are there any good videos available that teach anything about dancing with trays?

I've got a sword, but I'm having a lot of trouble balancing it (still say I have a pointed head).

I've got a cane......same problem (that whole conehead thing).

So....I bought a nice tray at the Sally last week. I can "sort" of balance it. I figure, it's a place to start, right? I mean, if i can learn to balance that, I can use what I learn to learn to balance my sword and cane.

Anyway, other than walking around with the thing, where I can get ideas on what to do with it (I don't have anything ON it yet......baby steps).... ?
